What Types of Neck Pain are There?

Neck pain can come from muscle and tendon issues, herniated discs, nerve impingement, arthritis, and more.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Injury, illness, and aging are the most common causes of neck pain. Injuries may be acute, such as whiplash, or they may be overuse injuries caused by things like excessive texting. Aging is often responsible for problems like osteoarthritis and cervical disc disorders.

How Common is Neck Pain?

Neck pain is extremely common. At any given time, approximately 13 percent of Americans will be suffering from this condition. Neck pain affects more women than men, but both sexes experience it frequently.

When is Neck Pain Dangerous?

If your neck pain is severe, lasts more than a few days, or is accompanied by other symptoms, see a doctor right away. Most neck pain is not dangerous.

How do I Prevent Neck Pain?

There is a long list of things that you can do to prevent neck pain:

  • Maintain proper posture (this includes moving computer screens, not looking down at your phone for long periods of time, etc.)
  • Perform stretching and strengthening exercises regularly
  • Sleep on an appropriate pillow
  • Avoid carrying things on only one side of the body (briefcases, messenger bags, etc.)
  • Perform self-massage

How Can I Help Myself?

If it's too late to prevent the problem, you can help yourself by using ice within a few days of the pain starting, and heat after that. Maintaining a supportive posture will help with healing, as well.

  • Chiropractic adjustments
