Car Accidents

What Neck Injuries Do Car Accidents Cause?

If you have been in a car accident in Irvine or the surrounding areas, Dr. Gary Martin, Irvine Chiropractor, wants to help. Our team can help diagnose and treat common neck injuries resulting from car accidents. Keep reading to learn about some common injuries we see.

Whiplash

The most common type of injury following a car accident is whiplash. When you are in a car accident, the impact of the car will often cause a back and forth jarring motion to your head and neck. This violent motion will cause the spinal vertebrae to become misaligned, which causes nerves to become irritated and the muscles of the neck to tense up quickly. Days later, you may start to notice neck pain and stiffness. This neck pain and stiffness is in response to those vertebrae, joints, nerves, muscles, and soft tissues being traumatized.

Whiplash can often result in other symptoms as well. Headaches are often common with whiplash. Shoulder pain can sometimes manifest a few days later as well. In severe cases, soft tissue damage may be present.

Spinal Disc Injury

A very serious type of neck injury is a spinal disc injury. Between each vertebra of the spine, there is a spinal disc that is designed to keep the vertebrae from touching each other. During a car accident, these discs can be damaged or rupture. If the spinal vertebrae become misaligned, it will weaken the disc and can cause a great deal of pain for the individual.
